March & April 2018

Symbolic Dream Panting Influenced by the artwork of Aboriginal Artists

Somehow we have survived this extra long winter and are emerging more ready for SPRING than ever before! All of the students at CHS are continuing to explore a variety of art materials and techniques, expressing themselves and sharing the joy of creating!

In May students in K-3 will be bring home their Art Portfolios. Please read the following link to prepare yourself for this exciting event:
Below is a quick taste of what students have been doing in the Art Room:

Primary Students have been busily engaged in a variety of art activities including creating concentric circle designs, observational drawing and painting, and kite-making. The kite-making was an extension of their "flight" study in the classroom (airplanes and birds). It was great fun to test the kites outside!

Kindergarten Students came out of hibernation along with their bears and emerged ready for some silliness with Dr. Seuss. They created collages made from hand-painted paper, silly ceramic Dr. Seuss sculptures, and  Matisse inspired collages:

First Graders have continued to enrich their classroom Social Studies Curriculum with a variety of art activities inspired by their travels; they created ceramic boomerangs inspired by Australia, as well as dream symbol paintings. They also painted Celtic designs on silk hoops inspired by Ireland, and drew their annual self-portrait:

Second Grade artists have been working on projects which enhance their understanding of Native American culture. They created dream catchers with feathers and handmade clay beads. They even learned to sew for this project! In addition, these young artists have been working on a three part Southwest Landscape Project in which they interpret photos through three different mediums - drawing, painting, and collage:

Third Grade Artists have been working with clay and focusing on a special design painting.Their paintings will be complete in a few weeks. Learning to persevere is one of the Studio Habit of Mind, identified by Harvard's Project Zero, and practiced in the art room. Many of the projects that third graders work on take several weeks to complete:

Portfolios

                                 Portfolios at CHS

For students in Kindergarten through Third Grade, portfolios are a special part of the Art Program at CHS. Artwork is created, displayed and collected throughout the year. In May, the young artists reflect on the year's activities by looking through their accumulated work as we assemble their portfolios. Each student selects and shares a favorite piece of work with the class.
After portfolio reflection activities, students take their portfolios home, share their work with parents, and return their empty portfolios to school for use the next year. Many parents report anticipating this event and enjoy looking at their child's work all at once, talking about it, and sharing this moment of accomplishment with their children.

Talking with your children about their artwork provides an opportunity for meaningful conversation. For suggestions about talking about art with children, please see my blog post:  Talking with Children about Art: An Opportunity for Meaningful Conversation.
